South Park Families:

The changing dynamics of the COVID-19 pandemic over the past week have presented challenges to all industries. Education is not excluded from those challenges. Our school administrators have creatively adjusted staff schedules to cover an increasing number of absences this week and to ensure we continue offering five days of in-person instruction throughout the district. And our staff members have stepped up to fill in whenever and wherever they are needed. While those adjustments may cause some minor changes to a student’s typical school day, they allow us to keep our schools open – a priority for all of us.

We did, however, want to make you aware that the district is experiencing an increasing number of staff absences due to positive COVID-19 cases, quarantines and other reasons. Let me be clear, we have no intentions of moving any building to a different instructional model. But in full transparency, we are sharing this message with you to say that should the district arrive at a point where we do not have adequate staffing levels to ensure instruction and supervision, we may need to make temporary adjustments to our instructional model in a building. Again, those adjustments would be temporary and would last only as long as necessary. But once again, I want to be clear, the district has no intentions of moving any building to a different instructional model. It would only do so out of necessity.

Staff absences are not just happening in our classrooms. Our transportation provider is also dealing with a temporary shortage of drivers due to illness and quarantines. Surrounding districts are experiencing this same issue, so we are sharing this information with you proactively. Should any district transportation run be uncovered, we will notify families as soon as possible. If those students are unable to be transported to school by a parent/guardian or family member, they will be marked as excused, they will in no way be penalized for not being in school and their teachers will post all assignments on Canvas. While we hope all transportation runs will be covered in the coming weeks, we have seen surrounding districts face a temporary shortage of drivers. Therefore, we wanted to make families aware of this possibility.

We must continue to stress that if your child is sick, has tested positive for COVID-19, is awaiting COVID-19 test results, living with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 or been exposed to a positive case of COVID-19 outside of school, please keep your child home and contact your building principal or school nurse for further guidance. Again, we remind all families to use the district’s symptom screening tool daily.

We will continue to share updates to families if and when they are needed.

Sincerely,

Wayne P. Gdovic
