The South Park School District wishes to clarify numerous misconceptions and rumors about the district’s recent decision to agree to a five-year contract with Matthews Bus Company beginning with the 2021-2022 school year.

The South Park School District posted a request for proposal for transportation services in February 2021. The proposal, which was available on the district’s website, was also advertised in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for three weeks, per district policy. The advertisement was published on February 28, March 7 and March 14. When the deadline for the submission of proposals was extended to April 5, it was published in the March 21 and March 28 editions of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

District administrators reviewed the two submitted proposals, one from Matthews and the other from First Student. District administrators believed that the best service, given the proposals, past history and references, would be provided from Matthews Bus Company. The Matthews proposal is available for review on the school board’s May 2021 meeting minutes on our website.

The Board of Directors approved the contract DURING the advertised virtual meeting on Thursday, May 13, 2021. The public had the ability to comment on the contract, listed on the board of directors’ agenda, prior to the board’s vote.

The district has worked with Matthews to ensure that positions are available for current South Park bus drivers. Matthews intends to let any driver who goes to Matthews drive his/her previous South Park route from their lot in Jefferson Hills if that driver applies for a position during a specified timeframe. Routes are subject to change over the summer, as always, based on ridership.

The district’s transportation office, not its transportation provider, routes all runs that come to South Park schools and to parochial/private/charter schools. The transportation department also notifies families of bus assignments in August and bus changes throughout the year. This will not change.

Families will receive an electronic transportation request form for the 2021-2022 school year in the coming weeks. If families or residents have questions, they may call the administration office at (412) 655-3111, option 4.
