The South Perk Café at South Park High School has a new look, thanks to a South Park student. The café, part of the South Park School District’s vocational education, had its grand reopening on Thursday, December 5.
The new and improved South Perk Café is thanks to Zachary Huwalt. Zack has been working to become an Eagle Scout and chose to dedicate his time to enhance the student-run café in the South Park High School cafeteria. Zack first approached Ms. Sahady in the spring and worked throughout the summer to raise funds for the project. Zack was able to raise thousands of dollars for the upgrades.
Zack then invested his time to design the café space. The South Perk Café now has its own dedicated area inside the cafeteria, including its own sink, cooler and latte machine. The café’s counter has been expanded. And now, students can relax with their drinks and snacks in a new lounge area. Ms. Sahady hopes to make additional enhancements later this school year, including a smoothie maker in the spring.
Ms. Sahady said Zack’s work will have a tremendous impact for her students as they gain real-world experience by interacting with and serving customers in an authentic café environment.
Zack and his fellow student-workers at the café cut the ribbon for the redesigned South Perk Café during a special ceremony during homeroom on Thursday, December 5. Everyone then had the chance to enjoy drinks and snacks following the ceremony. During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Zack presented Ms. Sahady with a check for $550.
The South Perk Café is open from first period through the lunches at South Park High School for students and staff.
