How would you like to play a video game using a Play-Doh game controller? Or would you want to play a song on a virtual piano that uses bananas as the keys? These are just a few of the hands-on activities that third grade students in Mrs. Casale’s technology class could do thanks to free classroom resources from the Center for Creativity’s STEAM Lending Library.

The STEAM Lending Library from the Allegheny Intermediate Unit offers Allegheny County teachers access to more than 1,000 pieces of equipment that support STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics). The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation generously funds the Lending Library. Mrs. Casale attended a free professional development training which now allows her to borrow resources from the Lending Library in Homestead.

One of the resources Mrs. Casale borrowed was Makey Makey, an invention kit which allows users to turn any item into a touchpad. After learning how to use Makey Makey, third graders got creative and began creating touchpads out of just about anything they could find. Some students drew a touch pad on a piece of paper. Others used Play-Doh, bananas and gummy worms to control computer games and applications. The possibilities truly were endless!
