Mrs. Baumgardner’s and Ms. Kolodziek’s classrooms are becoming certified kind classrooms. The nationwide program is based on the novel Wonder by R.J. Palacio. The story of Auggie, who was born with a craniofacial difference, teaches students about kindness, acceptance and inclusion. Students in Mrs. Baumgardner’s and Ms. Kolodziek’s classrooms are reading Wonder and working on STEAM projects that correlate with the novel. The classrooms’ motto is #ChooseKind.
On Tuesday, October 3, students participated in a Google Hangout video chat with Megan Brown. Ms. Brown was also born with a craniofacial difference. Ms. Brown, who is from Washington state, talks with students across the country to help bring Wonder to life and to deepen their understanding of choosing kind.
This Google Hangout video chat won't be the only one fourth grade students will experience this year. They will also participate in mystery video chats with other classrooms across the United States to discuss the novel.
