The South Park School District is aware of today’s Commonwealth Court ruling regarding the school mask mandate in Pennsylvania. Late this afternoon, the Pennsylvania Department of Education notified districts that the Pennsylvania Department of Health is appealing the ruling which would “trigger a stay of the Court’s ruling and keep the order in effect.” Additionally, the Department of Education said that districts are to “observe the school masking order throughout the duration of the court’s proceedings.”

With a stay, or pause, of today’s ruling enacted, the Department of Health’s order would remain in effect when the district reopens on Friday, November 12, and face coverings would be required.

If the stay were to be lifted, the district would return to its health and safety plan which was in effect at the beginning of the school year, prior to the Department of Health’s order taking effect on September 7. In that plan, the South Park School District strongly recommends, but does not require, the use of face coverings by all individuals while in district buildings based on current conditions.

Please know that a federal order requires individuals to properly wear face coverings while on school buses or vehicles.
