South Park High School Families:

Over the past few weeks, we have seen an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases at the high school. Following those cases, the district must conduct contact tracing, as per county, state, and federal requirements. In the past week, nearly 30% of all in-person high school students were quarantined. While revised CDC school guidance recommends three feet or more of physical distance in classrooms in some circumstances, the definition of a close contact has not changed and remains at six feet. And while cohorting students is possible at the middle school and elementary center, it is impossible at the high school where students change classes throughout the day.

In an effort to create a consistent learning environment and in line with guidance from the Pennsylvania Department of Education while Allegheny County is in the substantial phase of transmission, South Park High School will transition back to a hybrid instructional model on Monday, April 26, 2021. The hybrid instructional model used by the district earlier this school year maximizes the physical distance between students in classrooms and significantly reduces the number of students who must quarantine should a case occur. We understand this will be frustrating for families and staff. However, district administrators believe this decision will stabilize the sharp increase in quarantines at the high-school level. Instruction will be live streamed and/or recorded for the hybrid group learning from home on their group’s at-home learning day.

In-person learning will continue four days a week at South Park Middle School and South Park Elementary Center.

High school students in Hybrid Group A will attend in-person classes on Monday, April 26 and Wednesday, April 28. High school students in Hybrid Group B will attend in-person classes on Tuesday, April 27 and Thursday, April 29.

Students who attend Steel Center for Career and Technical Education will continue to attend in-person classes at Steel Center for up to four days per week, based on the Steel Center academic calendar. All Steel Center students are in Hybrid Group B.

When conditions allow a return to four days of in-person learning at the high school, families will be notified.
