The health and safety of our students and staff are always the top priorities of the South Park School District. In recent months, there have been local and national discussions about the presence of lead in drinking water. The South Park School District receives water from a public water system. There are no regulations requiring districts that receive water from public sources to test for lead in drinking water. Additionally, all three South Park schools are either recently built or newly renovated. There was no reason to believe that there were any lead issues with the district’s water. However, the Board of Directors and administrators agreed in early February to act proactively and have the district’s water tested.

Allegheny Global Environmental, Inc. based in Carnegie obtained a total of 112 samples in early March. The samples were taken from South Park High School on March 4, from South Park Middle School on March 6 and from South Park Elementary Center on March 7. Samples were taken from all taps that are accessible to students, all drinking fountains, all sinks that are accessible to students and all cafeteria water sources. All of the 112 samples were first draw samples, meaning the samples were of stagnant water before any flushing or use. The samples were delivered to the RJ Lee Group Laboratory in Monroeville for analysis.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency suggests that schools take action if lead is found in any sample at levels above 20 parts per billion (ppb). The report received from Allegheny Global Environmental, Inc. showed that all 112 samples were below the 20 ppb level and met the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Act.
