Katie Jackovic added to her collection of gold medals as our South Park swimmers set new standards at the WPIAL swimming championships held March 2-3 at the University of Pittsburgh’s Trees Hall.
Katie, a junior, swam the 100-meter butterfly and came in first place with a time of 55.63 seconds to earn her third career WPIAL gold medal. It was a personal best record and also broke the varsity record she set earlier in the season. Katie also competed in the 100 free and came in 3rd place. Again, she clocked a personal best and broke her own varsity record with a time of 51.33.
There were plenty of other highlights from the two-day event, such as:
- Senior Marina Malacki swam the 100 butterfly in 1:03.18, dropping 1.36 seconds for a personal best. Marina also swam the 200 free with a time of 2:06.71, dropping 0.37 seconds.
- Sophomore Megan Beam competed in the 500 free with a personal best time of 5:38.07, which was 6:54 seconds than her previous record. Megan also competed in the 100 butterfly with a time 1:07.00.
- Sophomore Yume Nakayama swam the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:07.72.
- Sophomore Elliot Guisti swam the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.38, shaving 1.85 seconds off his previous best time. Elliott also swam the 50 free in 24.08.
- Freshman Gabby Schneider competed in the 100 breaststroke and dropped 1.14 seconds off her best time by clocking in at 1:13.45.
- Katie Jackovic, Marina Malacki, Megan Beam and Gabby Schneider combined to swm the 200 medley relay in 1:55.14, which was 4.66 seconds faster than ever before. The relay placed 7th overall.
- Katie Jackovic, Marina Malacki, Megan Beam, and Yume Nakayama swam the 400 free relay in 3:46.31, dropping 9.66 seconds to earn 9th place overall and again setting a personal best for the relay.
- Camrie Hochendoner, Izzy Kennelly, Yume Nakayama, and Gabby Schneider swam the 200 free relay in 1:53.94.
- Elliot Guisti, Dominic Sprouse, Josh Kosmach, and Ethan Rakip swam the 200 Medley Relay in 1:54.40.
