After weeks of practice, the new South Park High School Unified Indoor Bocce team is ready for its first competition.

The bocce program is part of the Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools program to promote and strengthen inclusion and acceptance in schools. The three components of the program are Interscholastic Unified Sports, inclusive youth leadership and whole school engagement. The Unified Champion Schools program brings together students with and without disabilities to build teamwork and friendships while learning and playing the sport and, of course, having fun. There are nearly a dozen local districts that have partnered with Special Olympics Pennsylvania to form a unified bocce team. The Special Olympics Interscholastic Unified Sports program is supported by the PIAA and the Bureau of Special Education of the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

The Unified Bocce team is led by coaches Mr. Hufnagel, Mr. Pastorius and Ms. Carey. For more than a month, the team has practiced throughout South Park High School, in the cafeteria, gym and halls.

Tomorrow, they will compete together for the first time at Moon Area High School at 3 p.m. The team will participate in three competitions, plus a regional championship, during this inaugural season. The home competition will take place on Wednesday, February 12 at 3:30 p.m. at South Park High School. Go Eagles!
