This communication is a notification that a student at South Park High School tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday, November 13, 2020. The student was last in school on Monday, November 9 and is a member of the South Park hockey team. The South Park School District has enacted the procedures for responding to a confirmed case from our Health and Safety Plan and followed the guidance from the Pennsylvania Department of Health. We are working closely with the Allegheny County Health Department and will continue to adhere to all guidance and recommendations provided to us by public health officials.

The district consulted with the Allegheny County Health Department which reviewed each active case at South Park High School. The health department told the district there is no need for a closure of the high school at this time.

The Allegheny County Health Department will conduct contact tracing and make all quarantine recommendations. Close contacts will be notified by the Allegheny County Health Department and/or the district and begin quarantine.

Buildings are thoroughly cleaned nightly. However, affected areas of the high school will once again be cleaned and disinfected as per Pennsylvania Department of Health and CDC guidelines.

The individual will not return to school until the isolation period has concluded.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports individuals with COVID-19 may have mild to severe illness, and symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. Symptoms may include:

Fever or chills
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
Muscle or body aches
New loss of taste or smell
Sore throat
Congestion or runny nose
Nausea or vomiting

Individuals who exhibit any of these symptoms should contact their healthcare provider immediately.

The health and wellbeing of our students, faculty, staff and community are our primary concern. We will continue to monitor the situation and notify families and staff of any additional actions that may need to be taken.

This communication is being shared with all district families and staff as part of the procedures outlined in the district’s Health and Safety Plan approved by the Board of Directors on Tuesday, July 28. We will not release any additional information due to confidentiality and patient privacy laws.
